The characters in Brave New World are all inspired by historical figures of Aldous Huxley’s lifetime. Huxley uses each of the historical figures to further develop a vivid description of his characters in the novel. Lenina Crown is inspired by the Soviet Union leader Vladimir Lenin. Lenina is a conformist to society, and Lenin enforced communism in the early 1900s. John the savage resembles John the Baptist in the Bible. John the Baptist prophesized the coming of a new age, similar to the way John the Savage advocates the need for a new age. Bernard Marx is a combination of political figures in the 20th century. George Bernard Shaw supported women’s rights while Karl Marx believed in the power of the lower caste, both ideologies Bernard Marx is fascinated in. Helmholtz and Watson were physics intrigued by the studies of behaviorism and psychology. Helmholtz Watson, in the novel, was not a conformist and he taught as lecturer at the College of Emotional Engineering, inspiring his students to disobey the law. Mond, meaning “world” in French describes Mustapha Mond. Mustapha Mond was the controller of the World State. Also, multiple Turkish leader of Huxley’s time was named Mustapha. Each character, even the minor ones, was inspired by historical figures that changed the world.
Brave New World is quite similar to Divergent. In Divergent all the citizens are placed into castes, based on their personality and traits. The society is divided in order to maintain stability, and those who do not conform to the government are punished. Tris and John are considered a threat to society because they have their own view on the government. In both novels the government is portrayed as the “hero,” but there is an obvious flaw in both societies. False happiness is a theme in Brave New World as well as Divergent. Lenina is similar to Caleb because they both accept their role in society and they are completely content with the role that the government plays. These two books resemble each other immensely due to the dystopian society.
